In December I was sent to Hawaii to photograph adventure activities for Get Your Guide, a website that lists activities and tours all over the world. It was quite the whirlwind, covering 3 islands in 5 days.
First stop was Oahu! I went out to Kailua to meet with Kailua Beach Adventures to check out their kayaking tours. However, one thing that’s always true about adventure photography is that you should expect the unexpected! The morning of the shoot brought heavy rain, and on top of that a very rare swell in the wave patterns that required a cancellation of the tour. That doesn’t mean there are no pictures to be taken or fun to be had. The team at Kailua Beach Adventures was so welcoming and I took some shots around their shop and then was able to take a bike, another rental they offer, and head down to the beach during a break in the rain. I was able to explore the beautiful bay, white sand beach, and turquoise waters.
Right as I began to ride back to the shop, I was caught in an absolute downpour. I returned to the shop absolutely drenched but had so much fun. It’s the tropics, it’s adventure, and it really taught me to go with the flow.
Day 2 in Hawaii was surf lessons with Surfer Girl Academy at Waikiki beach. You couldn’t pick a more perfect spot to learn to surf with such a beautiful view as Waikiki and Diamondhead behind you. The students picked up the skills so quickly, and once they were out in the surf I got to make my way out on a jetty and watch these new surfers catching waves and having the time of their lives.
Right after the lesson I had to hop on a plane to Kauai.
(Sadly it was so rainy in Kauai that the shoot there was canceled, but after a bit of rainy exploring it was off to Big Island! I’ll share my Volcanoes National Park experience in my next post.)
